    Podgorica
Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro, lying 44 m above sea level between the Ribnica and Morača rivers. With 180,186 inhabitants (2023 figures) it is the country's largest city. Historically known as Doclea and Ribnica, it was once part of the Ottoman Empire and later of Yugoslavia. The ruins of the Roman city of Doclea and the remains of the Ottoman fortress are well worth a visit. Podgorica lies close to both the Adriatic and the Dinaric Alps, which makes it an ideal base for exploring. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild.
