Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, lies in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula on the river Tagus, at its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean. The city is home to more than 500 thousand people, while the whole metropolitan area has around 2.8 million inhabitants. Lisbon is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.
