    Izmir
Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey, lies on the Gulf of Izmir in the western part of the country. It has over 4.4 million inhabitants. It is an important commercial port and industrial centre with tobacco and cement plants and an oil refinery. Izmir also hosts the Izmir International Fair, the largest of its kind in the Middle East. The city's history reaches back to 3000 BC, and its growth accelerated in the time of Alexander the Great. The Mediterranean climate makes spring and autumn the best seasons for a visit.
