    Sofia
Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, set in the west of the country at the foot of the Vitosha massif. The city lies on the Boyana river and has a population of around 1.3 million. Its history reaches back to Thracian times, when it was called Serdica. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the ancient ruins of Serdica are well worth seeing. The temperate continental climate makes spring and autumn the best time to visit, when temperatures are mild and pleasant.
