Luanda
Luanda, the capital of Angola, lies in the north-west of the country on the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1576 by the Portuguese, it became an important centre of the slave trade. Today it is Angola's foremost economic and cultural centre, with well-developed food, textile and machinery industries. The city has a seaport and an international airport. The historic fortress of São Miguel and the museums are worth attention. Luanda is best visited in the dry season, from June to September.
