Ankara, the capital of Turkey since 1923, is situated in central Anatolia at an elevation of 938 meters above sea level. It is the country's second-largest city after Istanbul. Located on the Ankara River, it lies in Turkey's driest region, surrounded by steppes. Ankara is an important commercial, industrial, and political center, home to the government and embassies. The city is renowned for breeding Angora animals and producing pears, honey, and grapes. Numerous archaeological sites from various eras have been discovered in its vicinity. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, with mild temperatures.
