    Antananarivo
Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, lies in the centre of the island on the Ikopa River, at 1400 m above sea level. It is the country's largest city, with a population of more than 1.2 million. Important institutions are based here, such as the University of Madagascar. The city is known for landmarks such as the Queen's Palace and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. A temperate climate makes it a rewarding destination all year round, though the best months are May and September. Antananarivo is an administrative and economic centre with well-developed food and textile industries.
