Tromso
Tromso, the largest city in northern Norway, lies on the island of Tromsoya, 350 km beyond the Arctic Circle. Thanks to the North Atlantic Current, the climate here is milder. In winter you can watch the northern lights, and in summer enjoy the midnight sun. The city is famous for its 19th-century wooden houses and for Norway's oldest cinema, dating from 1916. Tromso was an important starting point for polar expeditions and is known as the Gateway to the Arctic. It is best visited in spring or summer, when temperatures are more pleasant.
