    Funchal
    Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is situated on the island's southern coast. It is an important commercial and fishing port, as well as a renowned climatic health resort. The city was founded in 1421 by João Gonçalves Zarco and was granted city rights in 1508. Funchal is famous for its wine industry. The climate is subtropical, with mild winters (19-20 °C) and warm summers (26 °C). The best time to visit is summer, when temperatures reach 26 °C. Funchal is the birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo and Vânia Fernandes.
